A brief introduction to Beijing
China’s majestic capital is a treasure trove of history and culture, home to no less than six UNESCO World Heritage sites – The Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Grand Canal, the Ming Tombs, and - just outside of the city limits - the amazing Great Wall of China.
Tiananmen Square marks the centre of the city and is a good place to start your journey. While travellers from across the world flock to Beijing for its history, the city is also known for its futuristic structures such as the mirrored Capital Museum building, angular CCTV Headquarters and the dynamic National Centre for the Performing Arts.
To the east of the city lies the Sanlitun area – home to high-end restaurants and bars where visitors can taste popular Beijing dishes such as Peking roast duck, and the sweet and savoury Qianlong cabbage. For shoppers, head to the historical Qianmen Street where modern luxury brands and authentic travel souvenirs are readily available.
