    A brief introduction to Madrid

The capital of Spain, Madrid is a city of elegant boulevards and expansive parks, and is renowned for its rich reserves of European art, as well as its world class museums.

To see works by Goya, Velázquez and other Spanish masters, visit Spain’s largest art museum - the Museo del Prado. Echoes of old Hapsburg Madrid can be uncovered at the portico-lined Plaza Mayor, where you can shop, wander, and eat local delicacies. Nearby, you’ll find the baroque Royal Palace and Armory, displaying historic weaponry on an exquisite site that once housed the 9th-century Royal Alcázar.

For food and entertainment, Gran Vía street is an urban esplanade nicknamed ‘Spanish Broadway’ for its endless shopping and dining options. To sample a selection of authentic Spanish tapas and Madrid-style churros, visit Calle de la Cava Baja in the La Latina neighbourhood. Culture lovers will appreciate the Matadero district, which is home to galleries, exhibitions, trendy cafes, and live music. We also recommend visiting the Parque del Oeste – a pretty, landscaped urban park of conifer and cedar trees where the culturally significant Temple of Debod resides.
